Ducks are forbidden from walking past the tree line. Our boss delineated the line with a row of sticks, and everyone is convinced it’s the end of our planet. It’s not that ducks haven’t gone past the tree line, they have. We just haven’t seen them ever return. I wonder if it’s because these adventurous ducks see something that draws them away from this stifling lake. We aren’t permitted to develop our own personalities here. We’re strictly watched, and forced to behave in ways that are anathema to duck nature. Even small deviations are punished, especially by social mortification.
